Chapin Hall Identifies Core Components for Authentic Youth Engagement

An increasing number of organizations seek to hire youth with lived experience to contribute to research, policy, and advocacy initiatives. This trend reflects a growing recognition that lived expertise can provide valuable insights and perspectives to the work being done. By hiring individuals with diverse backgrounds, organizations can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the issues they aim to address, and develop more effective strategies for achieving their objectives.

Chapin Hall recently launched the Empowering Youth Study to understand better what authentic youth engagement means and how it can be best practiced at Chapin Hall and other youth-centered organizations. This study was done with Point Source Youth and True Colors United.

Empowering Youth Study youth consultants and staff identified the following five core components to authentic youth engagement

  1. Equitable compensation
  2. Accommodations and supports
  3. Respect for youth skills and leadership
  4. Transparency
  5. Rapport building
